World and Engagement

World and Engagement
Practical Totality
The world appears as networks of instruments and tasks. The for-itself is not a spectator outside these relations but acts within them.
Meaning
The world refers back to what the person can do, while remaining independent as in-itself.
The Body's Place

The Body's Place
Situated Perspective
The body is the contingent point of view through which the world is revealed. Its location gives direction to practical relations.
No Detached Observer
There is no pure survey of the whole world from nowhere. Knowledge is always engaged and situated.
Other Centers

Other Centers
Reorganization
Another person appears as a center around which objects acquire a different order. The observer's world is decentered.
Alienation
The objects remain present, but their relations reveal a perspective that belongs to another freedom.
Place as Project

Place as Project
Distance Defined
A place becomes near, remote, safe, or threatening through a project and its possible route. Geometry alone does not supply lived meaning.
Fact and Freedom
The person receives a location but freely interprets and surpasses it toward an end.
An Alienated Situation

An Alienated Situation
External Meaning
The Other can organize the person's conduct as an object within a world not controlled by that person. The situation acquires an outside.
Enduring Tension
This outside cannot be abolished by private choice, though the person remains responsible for how the situation is assumed.
